  12. Thirty-Three people attended the NISI session.  April Marine (co-Chair)

  25. History:  the nic-profiles concept was conceived at the St.  Louis
  26. meeting in March 1991.  The idea behind nic-profiles is to obtain and
  27. maintain key pieces of information about NICs around the world that will
  28. be easily accessible to all the NICs.

  30. A mail server is in place to add/modify/retrieve nic-profiles
  31. information.  Send to x500test@merit.edu and put ``help'' in the subj:
  32. field to receive further information.

  34. This project is now an action item at the top of the NISI priority list.
  35. The near-term goal is to have information on as many NICs as possible by
  36. the March IETF.

  38. Suggestions were made that we make every effort to utilize any
  39. collections of information that may already exist and that we try to
  40. approach the ``right'' people when attempting to obtain this information
  41. so that the request doesn't get tossed in the black hole.

  43. Three volunteers, Charlotte Mooers (NNSC/BBN), Marsha Perrott (PREPnet)
  44. and Bill Yurcik (NASA) will work with Pat Smith (Merit) on proactive
  45. outreach to discover as many NICs as possible, group them in some
  46. logical way, and then proceed with making the contacts to interest them
  47. in filling out a template and submitting it to nic-profiles
  48. electronically.

  50. Net-help

  52. Current plans.  Extensive discussion took place regarding how we are
  53. going to keep net-help as simple as possible.  A sampling of
  54. questions/comments:

  62.    o Where will the information coming from?
  63.  
  64.    o The contents of the help screen should be managed locally.  Each
  65.      site should be able to control where they send their users.

  67.    o How ``smart'' will net help be?

  69.    o What about dial-ins where the IP is dynamically assigned?

  72. After discussion of these and other points, Ed Kroll volunteered to
  73. write an ``implementation requirements'' brief document as a starting
  74. point.  Ed will send his draft out to the list.  The plan is that we
  75. will hack on it at the next meeting and, hopefully, come up with
  76. agreed-upon written requirements which we can then use to work with the
  77. applications folks and work toward a feasible implementation plan.

  79. The other very brief paper will summarize the nethelp plan as it stands
  80. now, including the screen that was agreed on at the July '92 meeting.

  83. There was some further discussion on how nethelp will be enhanced in the
  84. future.  Future of NISI

  86. Again there was a short of period of discussion regarding the future of
  87. NISI. The Group consensus is that NISI is needed and will continue as a
  88. viable Working Group.
